Our work in numbers
At SAO, we never reduce people to numbers. We see them for who they are: unique individuals deserving fairness and compassion. We are committed to providing high-quality, free services and view the women we serve as our clients. We recognise that each person is unique and has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. This commitment drives us to invest the time and care necessary to offer meaningful support to each person.
In 2025, the Bashira and Amina Day Centres received 6,963 visits from displaced women and 3,850 visits from their children. In each visit, women were welcomed by a small and dedicated team of professionals, who provided tailored support and achieved results in three key areas.
Assistance with basic necessities
In 2025, displaced women received a total of 6,708 bus tickets to travel from and to their home or the camp, enabling them to access our Day Centre, the hospital, legal services, the police and local authorities.
On average, 104 women used supermarket vouchers we provided to cover food needs, every month. Additionally, we distributed thousands of items to cover basic needs. They included newborn bundles, nappy sets, clothing items and pairs of shoes, school bags filled with school essentials, bedding and children’s toys.
We make sure that women receive essential support in a respectful manner. Once their basic needs are covered, women can shift their focus to building a better future for themselves and their families.
In both Athens and Lesvos displaced women received supermarket vouchers and bus tickets to cover their basic needs.
We provided 817 individual counselling sessions and arranged 372 medical appointments. We support each woman for as long as she needs us.
Empowerment through psychosocial support
In 2025, with the help of our cultural mediators, our specialists provided 817 individual counselling sessions. These sessions addressed questions, offered guidance and facilitated access to healthcare, education and employment opportunities.
We also arranged 372 medical appointments, assisting women in navigating the complicated processes. Additionally, we fulfilled 199 requests for mental health support for the women or their children with psychosocial support sessions and referrals to specialists.
We stand by each woman for as long as she needs us, helping her grow stronger and more resilient in the face of life’s challenges in Greece.
Inclusion through education
Throughout 2025, a total of 772 teaching hours were delivered by a professional teacher at the Amina Day Centre in Athens, as part of our informal Greek language programme. Depending on the month, 23-33 women attended each week. Learning Greek is instrumental in helping them better integrate into Greek society and supports their goal to become financially independent.
At the Bashira Day Centre on Lesvos, throughout the year we provided 282 educational hours. Specifically, we helped schoolchildren as well as women who go to the second-chance school or the adult evening school to do their homework. Additionally, we created discussion circles in foreign languages, specifically in English, Greek and French, sewing workshops, and computer and mobile phone use seminars to improve digital skills.
