Our work in numbers
At SAO, we never reduce people to numbers. We see them for who they are: unique individuals deserving fairness and compassion. We are committed to providing high-quality, free services and view the women we serve as our clients. We recognise that each person is unique and has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. This commitment drives us to invest the time and care necessary to offer meaningful support to each person.
In 2024, the Bashira and Amina Day Centres welcomed 6,534 visits from displaced women and 3,199 visits from their children. During each visit, a small and dedicated team of professionals provided tailored support and achieved results in three key areas.
Assistance with basic necessities
In 2024 on Lesvos, displaced women received a total of 5,225 bus tickets to travel from and to the camp or their home, enabling them to access our Day Centre, the hospital, legal services, the police and local authorities.
In our premises in Athens, we distributed 1,259 packages consisting of non - food as well as food items to displaced women and their children. They included 38 newborn bundles, 196 nappy sets, 466 clothing items and pairs of shoes, 86 school bags filled with school essentials, 101 Christmas gift packages for children and 112 Christmas gift packages for women.
We make sure that women receive essential support in a respectful manner. Once their basic needs are covered, women can shift their focus to building a better future for themselves and their families.

Empowerment through psychosocial support

We also arranged 361 medical appointments, assisting women in navigating the complicated processes. Additionally, our psychologists offered 95 sessions to women who needed support with their mental health.
Our collaboration with each woman lasts for as long as she needs our support, so that she is equipped with more resilience to face the realities of life in Greece.
Inclusion through education
Throughout 2024, a total of 880 teaching hours were delivered by a professional teacher at the Amina Day Centre in Athens, as part of our informal Greek language programme. Depending on the month, 18-36 women attended each week. Learning Greek is instrumental in helping them better integrate into Greek society and supports their goal to become financially independent.
At the Bashira Day Centre on Lesvos, 76 workshops and sessions offered useful skills such as basic conversational English, basic computer skills, CV writing, sewing, hair and facial beauty services such as eyebrow shaping, thread hair removal, makeup and braiding.
